Dreaded C+ on transcript

right this is the thing, if you don't have a great transcript, you need to ace the SAT.

Can OP's daughter do this?

If not, then all those schools she mentioned in the OP are totally out. Unless you have some other hook but it doesn't sound like you do or you would have mentioned it.

Is that a joke or is the Duke poster really spouting almost 30 year old stats?

He also got into Michigan and was waitlisted at Chapel Hill. You definitely don't need "perfect grades" to get into those schools.

All posts like this should state the graduation year. Otherwise it is useless information.

During 9th and 10th grade most of her grades were usually an A or A- with a couple of B's thrown in. Science is something she has always struggled with and this semester she got a dreaded C+ in her science class. We're hoping this one "C" letter grade is an anomaly and the rest of her high school years will be As and Bs (fingers crossed). DD is not looking to study science in school and is looking at an English or History major. She will not apply to any Ivy League schools but may be interested in applying ED to schools like Duke or Northwestern or some SLACs. She also likes Berkeley and UCLA. Does one "C" letter grade in 10th grade impact her chances at these colleges. DD has some great extracurriuculars including some competitive summer scholarships so she does have that going for her.

DD is upset about the "C" grade and we're hoping to help put this in perspective for her. And yes, we will ask the counselors but we don't have our first meeting until this fall.

Even without a C, the grades are pretty bad. Paying $$$ and getting that kind of grades. Flush the money into the toilet. Who cares it's a Big 3.

You don’t know what you are talking about.

My son is at a big 3. We had the director of admissions from 1 ivy and one very competitive public university gives talks on the admissions process at their respective schools. The Director from the ivy said not to be disheartened if transcript had a grade such as a C in a subject if the child was not looking to study that specialty at college. He specifically said that if the student was looking to study sciences and had competitive grades in those subjects and a C in history, they would still be in the running for a place at that particular ivy.

My son is at a big 3. He has similar grades but a few A+s as well. He also has a couple of Cs from freshman and sophomore year. He is now a junior and his unweighted GPA is 92.89%. We just met with his college counselor. My son had not put any ivies on his list because of the Cs. His counselor looked at list and asked him why he hadn’t added x and y ivy as reaches but with reasonable chance of acceptance based on previous years’ acceptances of non-legacy and non-athletic students? He also took some reaches from the reaches list and put them as targets. All is not lost.
