Too overprotective?

If your niece is a responsible driver, and does not use her phone while driving, I'd allow this.

By 18 I had driven myself all over the country on road trips solo and with my sisters. Like everyone else is saying, it depends on her experience. But I wouldn't rule it out all together just because she's 18.

I drove myself all over the northeast at 17 and 18 visiting colleges and have never been in an accident in 20 some odd years of driving. I would not have a problem with this. Now, my FIL, who has incidents where he blacks out and should not be on the roads at all, is not allowed to drive my children anywhere.

Our daycare has one of these “field trips” coming up and I’m super irritated by it- if I wanted to take my kid to this place, I’d do it, on a non work day because it is not something I’d prioritize taking a vacation day to do.

I second having her drive the route with you beforehand so she is familiar with it. Many kids are driving themselves back and forth to college at that age...I think this is fine if she is a responsible 18.

This 100% comes down to whether your niece is a good driver. 18 isn't that young; she's probably had her license for a year or two? Ask her parents and/or take her for a test drive and see what you think. I certainly wouldn't say no w/o having reason to believe she wasn't a good driver.

What about ask her parents? Why is it always the mom?

Because moms typically worry more. See THIS EXACT THREAD as an example.

OP, the most dangerous part of the situation is that your niece will be part of a caravan. Many church and scouting groups do not allow them.
