Families in Illinois won't even consider state colleges because of the budget crisis. Sad. |
I was a NP |
Doesn't really change the point- people who think rising tuitions only happen in red states, or that it's the fault of Republicans, especially in a thread that is about NORTHWESTERN, a PRIVATE college whose tuition has nothing to do with state funding, are just plain wrong and revealing themselves as ignorant, partisan hacks. And when they're presented with facts, the ol' "that's different" comes out. |
Maybe you need to update your notes with this map of Republican-governor led states. 33 states have Republican governors. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/elections/current_governor_map/2018.html This is not about red or blue states overall. It's about Republican governors. Who typically cut education budgets. There is plenty of info out there demonstrating that in general universities have to raise tuition when they are granted less funding from states. There are other factors as well but this is a major one. |
Except four of the five of the states that increased budgets were under Republican governor. |
|
The evidence for the notion that budget cuts are to blame for rising tuitions is weak at best, and it's unfortunate that people keep repeating it.
https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/08/study-public-university-funding-cuts-do-not-lead-to-tuition-hikes/ Also doesn't explain why private colleges are hiking tuition at even greater rates... |
So 4 Republican governors raised budgets and 28 cut budgets and you are concluding that Republican governors don't cut budgets? |
Every once in a while, you need an adult in the room to say you cannot spend that much. |
Sure, if that's how you want to view it. Just don't be one of the people complaining about tuition increases. |
Well that's stupid logic. Democratic governors cut budgets too....so now what? |
|
I think an angry political weirdo from the politics forum drifted over here.
While public state university costs are high enough they're still manageable. The real scandal is why private colleges are so expensive. There is a sheer hypocrisy in that higher education, especially elite private higher education, is so staunchly liberal and at the same time so staunchly expensive. I'm not sure how they justify the high tuition alongside preaching diversity and meritocracy..... |
In smaller % than the Dem governors, yes...not sure why simple numbers are hard for you to understand. |
In the same proportions? I highly doubt it. |
29/33 Republican governors, 26/27 Democratic governors cut budgets...so no not quite the same proportion. |
| Source please. |
