Recommend books to read before heading off to college

Another way to go is just fun gripping best-seller type summer reading. Or mysteries. Light fluff.

Where is your DC going to college OP? Maybe we can suggest some location-specific reading?

I think part of keeping females safe is having them recognize that just because, for example, they SHOULD be allowed to do the same things that males do, doesn't mean that they can without risk. And young females that are unprotected are targets. And also, how incredibly immoral and evil some people can be.

WTF?

I think this is a good age for 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho.

There is nothing shocking about that post. It is very insightful and might I add another movie "The Dictator". Females should learn to empathize with men that live an upper class life style. Girls are likely to encounter them at popular colleges with many rich male candidates. Just because the male may seem rugged doesn't mean he can't be a potential mate especially if he is wealthy. There are many wealthy men that are a diamond in the rough.

This is the strangest thread ever. What parents are looking for books to shove in their kids faces for the summer.

I suggest Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds. Oh, and Monster's University.

I found it strange too. Trying to be more charitable, perhaps they are looking for graduation gifts?

My sister sent my HS senior DC a copy of "The Naked Roommate" for Christmas. It induced eye-rolls when unwrapped, but it appears to have been read, or at least thumbed through, since then.

It makes clear how easy it is to get into really unfortunate situations with consent and lack thereof, especially when alcohol or other drugs are involved. I think most kids would benefit from reading it. It is also well written and the legal aspects are very interesting.

+1 for Missoula.

Two biggest idiots on DCUM, hands down.

Bunch of whackos.

If a student has not acquired a wide and deep pre-college matriculation literary foundation, a few summer pages won’t help.

New favorite thread. Taken is just the most awesomely insane suggestion. That poster has a particular set of skills.
