Are you giving your kids any summer school work?

What do you think about summer slide and the best ways to prevent it?

I don’t think there is summer slide anymore than there is regular school year slide. We teach the kids stuff and they forget they learned it. It happens. Hopefully some sticks. But your crappy worksheets don’t replace teaching, so they don’t prevent whatever summer slide there might be anyway. Learning isn’t done on worksheets alone at home. They are better off reading A LOT, hanging with family and friends, going to museums and traveling, etc.

Every other teacher in America is mad at you right now, lol.

20:03 here. Why do you say this? As I mentioned earlier I don't know of any colleagues who assign work over the summer.

Does your school give summer homework? I don't think my DD's does, though maybe they will this year.

The brain needs to rest. It is much better for the kid. Give kid a break. Summer school should be consider a child abuse

Yeah, you need to flex your young child's brain so he won't end up like most people who tried to find a tiger in this picture.

My children don’t like the change caused by summer. We continue and they are happiest.

Why would we be mad? I don’t understand, but I’m not a proponent of homework. I hear similar comments about refusing to take SOL tests or staying “no” to retesting. Do parents think we’re against doing so?

Another teacher. Totally agree. Kids don’t need summer homework. Take them to museums. Go camping and hiking. Let them relax and enjoy the break.

Summer is one of the causes of academic achievement gap between lower and middle/upper middle classes and not because of worksheets. Kids with educated, well-resourced parents are more likely to have enriching experiences: museums, interesting camps, reflective conversations, time to explore interests. They experience a summer gain rather than a summer slide (although it may take them time to get back into the routine of school). Whereas lower SES kids whose families don't have the spare money/time/access to opportunities experience the summer slide. One of the arguments for year round school has been to create a more even experience due to this gap.

Another teacher here. My children won’t be completing any academic work. One will read a lot because she enjoys it. The other will spend hours outside then too much time on electronics. Both will be fine in the fall when school starts again.

I love me some worksheets ! They reinforce what was taught. Growing up I played school almost daily with my friends. I did tons of worksheets. I read books and wrote my own book reports.

They do not, but you can continue to play with them if you like them.

-teacher who doesn’t assign any school work over any break and doesn’t make my kids do it either

Minecraft or Roblox work wonders for this.

If there is no value in worksheets why are they sent home daily as homework?
