I'm in Maryland and I want a bridge. It is irresponsible to have only one (in terms of safety/terrorism, etc.) AND I get sick of sitting and sitting in traffic from Democracy Blvd south, waiting for folks to get into Virginia, where they finally have lanes to move into. For all of you who hate roads, take the Metro and get out of the way...

You hate sitting in traffic? Think about the people who live on your path going South. Take Falls to River or 270. People walk on those roads on the way home, school, shopping, work, or to the playground. There aren't even rumble stripes dividing where people walk and the road. It is so dangerous 2 schools and one community hire a police or a crossing guard.

I wish the community lobby was strong enough to demand raised sidewalks, rumble strips, require local private schools to bus, or could institute a local traffic only during rush hour to protect those who get off buses and walkers.

Lol you don’t seem to love roads much either since you are bitching about being stuck in traffic on them. The last thing this region needs is more roads for single occupancy vehicle to sit on and pollute the air from.

Agreed, my fantasy is more and more frequently running public transit. We don't need to keep digging this hole deeper, and yet....

Forget it.

A better option would be another identical crossing right next to the current one, use both, that way, if anything happened on one span all the traffic could use the other. A crash won't shut down both spans.

Things change. Residents are very worked up about the 270 expansion.

I bet a lot of people would love to build that bridge right over Trump's golf course. I bet MD and VA could get support just by promising that.

cars won't be abolished.

Md is going to build new HOT lanes at the American Legion Bridge - that will provide some transit (express buses in the HOT lanes) and also more capacity for cars. In the location where its more valuable (headed to Tysons) and further from the Ag Reserve

Nobody is building an upstream bridge.

If there as a terrorist attack, why would people from Maryland be sent to Virginia, or vice versa? More likely a serious attack in DC and people sent out along the radials.

You need to look at a map.

I for one would like to be able to get to my child across the river in the even that some kind of evacuation is required.

When I was a child, we had evacuation drills for nuclear bombs. (I lived in an industrial city.) Somehow, I don't think Marylanders would be evacuating eastward or DC would be evacuating eastward.........

I doubt that kind of thing would be possible even with another bridge. If there is an evacuation, kids will be evacuated immediately.
