Recess for Kindergartners in MoCo schools

What will happen to the Oakland Terrace kindergarteners when they are at Sligo Middle School? No more little kid playground. Superintendent says no money for fencing or playground equipment for them when they move to Sligo.

Second recess is after lunch, around 12:30, for another 30 minutes. If you count the 15 minutes all kids are allowed to play outside from the time the bus drops them off at 8:30 until the bell rings at 8:45, there are three play/running around times. And, in addition, the K teachers all strived to give even additional times outside at the end of the day if the weather was especially nice or if the kids seemed to need it. It is a WONDERFUL school, with a great principal, mostly fabulous teachers, superb facilities and a low social-overhead, caring, mostly liberal community of parents. I love it.

Yes, but compare that to DC's private school, and that is not a lot. Our DC who is in K in private school gets a total of 1 1/2 hours of recess, which does not include snack time lumped in with it or free time outside during arrival. When you say that snack is a part of the 30 minutes alloted, that is not 30 minutes of running around time, unless your child foregoes snack. I think the lack of recess time for K kids is criminal in public schools.

I want my child to go to this school? Which one is it, please? Thanks!

9:31 here. Ugh. Sorry for the odd misplaced question mark. I meant, "I want my child to go to this school!" Nt enough coffee yet today.

NOT, not "nt." My fingers are cold!

To Somerset parents: the school sounds great and not just because of its recess policies. We're considering a move to the neighborhood. Do the kids learn to be accepting of different types of families, religions, ethnic groups, from the school? I would imagine the (largely liberal) families in the neighborhood inculcate these values in the kids, but it would be such a added benefit if the school makes an effort to talk about difficult issues and differences and teach acceptance as well. I've heard this sort of things varies wildly by school.
