What percentage of kids at top colleges are there because they're connected, bought in, or fraud?

Very small percentage.

The bigger numbers of questionable students get in through sports programs and "affirmative" action.

Affirmative action broadly conceived: legacies, athletes, whoever called in a favor to the dean, and Early Decision applicants who will commit regardless of financial aid in exchange for higher chance of admission.

I honestly don't think there are that many. I'm not sure about "connected". I can believe children of professors, politicians, etc. would be more likely to be admitted although it's hard to tell what % they would make up. But outright fraud or bought in? Not likely. How many people are making 1 million donations to colleges? Very few I'm sure. And apparently the ringleader of the Varsity Blues fraud said that the reason the parents wanted to spend the money cheating instead of simply making a donation was become it seemed more certain to them. A big donation was no guarantee that their kid would get admitted, so that tells you something there. I imagine someone would have to donate at least $500,000 to get an unqualified kid admitted and I don't think many people are really doing that. Even those who have the means wouldn't necessarily want to do it, because it would be public record, and most people don't want their kid to have the stigma of having had the parents "buy them into" a school.

Higher than you think. From our private each year, the wealthy gets in through athletic recruiting plus $$$ or just $$$. About 30% of class goes to ivies = 36 and about 50% to 75% are due to $$$.

Look at Harvard Z list - those are $$$$. So if there are 10 to 20 on the list, it doesn’t include the $$$ that got in during SCEA or RD.

Probably fewer than the percentage of unqualified people in high salary jobs who got there through connections.

Hard to say if this was a scheme or helicopter kids who are starting to think for themselves and don’t want to piss away hours every day playing for an asshole coach in front of 10 fans? Good luck “forcing” Susie to wake up at 5am for practice M-F and burning weekends on the road when you’re 700 miles away.

Being blown way out of proportion by parents who resent their little darling geniuses not getting into every school to which they apply. rather than accepting the reality that their kid just wasn't good enough, they'd prefer to invent some sort of vast conspiracy that is shutting little Johnny or Janey out of the schools they so obviously deserve. people are self-delusional. Repeat after me: My kid is nothing special.

That’s different to be honest.

The ncaa forces dudes like Derrick rose to take a dumb test to ball out.

I don’t care if Elite ballers have fake scores to put up ncaa bs.

I do care if non-elite ballers do to get into schools that aren’t pro factories

Tons of folks get into college who are not qualified. Only difference is these folks were stupid enough to pay

Well the only non athletic ivy-bound kid in our school so far had to repeat a grade in elementary school and is still in the lowest math offered. Her family is loaded.

And the top ranked kids (who will most likely need some FA) were all deferred or rejected.

So, it is pretty obvious and embarrassing if you ask me.

She might have some special gifts, talents, or experiences that you don't know about.
