My 7 and 9 year olds walk together, but usually with other kids (and every once in a while the 2nd grader walks just with 2 other 2nd graders). I’d be comfortable with the 9 year old (4th) going alone but not the little one - though our walk in almost a mile without sidewalks for part. In your situation, I’d probably say 3rd grade, maybe 2nd. FWIW, third is when kids at our ES don’t need a note to be independent walkers. |
Similar neighborhood and school situation. I think we started allowing our oldest kid to walk home alone a few times in 4th grade. But I WAH part-time, so I enjoyed picking up the youngest from preschool and taking a walk to the school, and the kids played on the playground with other kids after school most days.
Other neighbors allowed their K and 2nd siblings to walk home alone together, which seemed young to me, but they were fine. |
Wouldn’t even consider it until junior high |
We started in first grade. |
