| Does anyone here know if Hoover is offering both IM and AIM? I had older DS's go through Hoover so didn't go to Parent night and was surprised when DD was recommended for AIM instead of IM. It seems like schools are handling the course differently so wondering if Hoover admins said anything about it. |

My daughter is in compact math 5th grade and we haven't heard of a middle school open house or what math she will be in next year.
What are we missing? |

Caveat -- I'm not a teacher. But I think for the right kid who studies hard and has good teaching it's just fine. In 11th, the kid who doesn't love math as much can take AP Calc AB and then AP Stats the next year, or AP Calc BC if they want. The kid who wants the challenge can take AP Calc BC and then Multivariable Calculus. My kid did this track and has loved it. Although his two calculus classes taught by the same hardcore teacher have kicked his butt and he's gotten Bs for the first time ever in math class, that's a great thing IMO because I know he has to work hard and stay on top of the problem sets. My kid got on the IM track in 6th grade after we moved to MoCo -- the placement test put him in Math 6, but he was bored to tears within a couple of weeks and we got him moved to IM. I think the flip side of potentially pushing kids too hard is placing them in classes that are too easy/too slow and risking boredom. You know your kid best though. |
The 5th grade math teacher will recommend a math placement for her for 6th grade. You can contact your assigned MS to see when they will be doing an open house or course registration for next year. |
My CES child was very bored by the compacted math. Does this mean that they are doomed to further boredom in 6th grade? |

Not necessarily. IM is much faster-paced than Compacted 5/6 is. It's covering 2 years of content (Math 7 + Math 8) rather than 1 1/2. |
True, but they are two years with a lot of overlapping content, so it’s not like they have to go twice as fast. They can take advantage of the spiraled curriculum by not having to review the topic before they go deeper. |
Hoover only has AIM, also only has HIGH. So no cohort existed, one big happy family

| I think for N Bethesda this year for 6th grade it is only AIM and Grade 6 math, instead of the 3 levels. At least according to the course book my younger DC brought home. |

Silver Creek registration packet also lists only AIM and Grade 6 math. So maybe it was a terminology change at some point?
I am confused by the statements that all kids are in AIM/tons of kids are in AIM (or IM). I was more under the impression it might be one or two classes--so say, in a class of 300 kids, it might be 50 or 60. Is that what you are seeing at your schools? I am definitely seeing AIM listed for 7th graders too, to answer PP's question. |

My child takes AIM 6 which is the path for compacted math students in MS.My kid got As in 5th grade compact math too but was never the best math student, more middle of the pack. Yes, it goes fast. You don't touch on the topics long enough to get a deep understanding of it. She's a B student now but truthfully I do think she needs a tutor and sometimes I wonder if it will serve her better to go down a level. Also consider that this path is to take Algebra 1 by next year and that grade starts counting towards HS GPA. I would say that if your child doesn't need a lot of time to understand the topics, doesn't need extra help then absolutely go for it, otherwise really consider a supplementary math class over the summer and/or during the school year to help reinforce the topics learned. And no, there are no textbooks or workbooks in MS and to top it all off, your kid will be going to multiple classes daily and will really need to be organized in tracking when is homework due and when quizzes are given. Part of the struggle my daughter is experiencing too which has led to her not doing well in some of her math tests. |
