S/o Georgetown Hot Mess

It seems like it is a gateway name only. It’s like the students feel used for how poorly they were treated for the amount of money they paid. No school spirit, none. They just don’t do much for students and alumni. Why should you donate?

Does Georgetown have a big legacy following?

Oh my, I hate to get all "back in the day" but "back in the day" we didn't expect to live in a country club. We expected to get an education.

Back in my day, we learned about false equivalencies.

Boston College’s per student endowment is 2x Georgetown’s, College of the Holy Cross’s is about 4x Georgetown’s, Notre Dame’s is 10x Georgetown’s. Santa Clara University’s is also higher.

Santa Clara has very generous wealthy donors from the SV area. The campus is beautiful!

It'll be interesting to see where Santa Clara ends up when it lands in the US News National Universities category in September. (It is being moved from the Regional category due to changing definitions of the Carnegie classifications.)

I was walking on the GW campus last weekend, and a rat ran across the path in front of me. It is an urban reality. But mold, and trash management are a pricy school’s responsibility

I think it is impossible to clean up the mold in those old dorms. Between the no A/C, leaking and busty pipes, urban location, and the lack of cleaning (both the kids and staff) - you just aren’t going to miraculously clean it up.

Why on Earth would anyone go to that school knowing the conditions? And their S&P rating is in the tank as well at a Baa2 -- considered one of the worst credit worthy universities in the nation. The article states that only 7 universities have the coveted triple A rating...Notre Dame is one of them. Where is that Georgetown booster/ND basher now?

In my Bethesda neighborhood, I have several friends who are on the faculty at Georgetown, and they are very high quality.

My main association with Georgetown is through their medical facilities -- both of my kids were both at Georgetown Hospital 10-12 years ago. We have always been happy with the level of medical care, but have been genuinely surprised that the facilities are so old and run down. I've driven on Reservoir Road recently, and noticed that they are finally building what looks like a new hospital (or at least part of a new hospital).

In other parts of the US, I think people are used to having nicer and newer medical facilities than they offer at Georgetown.

I went to Georgetown SFS and got out of it what I needed to -- a solid education in international politics and connections to help me get the job I have now. I made some good friends there and had a fun time with my extracurriculars. I wouldn't say I have a huge amount of loyalty to the school, though.

I did see the difference in spending and facilities when I visited DH's alma mater (Michigan). They have a beautiful campus and do an amazing job cultivating loyalty among their alumni. He adores Michigan.

GU sold the hospital to Medstar in 2000. If you have issues with the building, complain to Medstar, not the university.

Georgetown’s current Moody’s rating is A2, with a stable outlook. Georgetown is definitely less wealthy than many other institutions, including ND, but it is hardly on the brink of financial collapse.

Cousin in Georgetown was studying in her dorm room a couple months ago and her a rustling noise. She looked down to see a rat under her desk looking up at her. She screamed so loud the police showed up.

Students are telling me the place is a pit. Rats are everywhere at night (beyond the normal level of urban rats but just frightening levels). Some buildings have a bad smell. Really quite shocking.
