Does your ES ever have outdoor PE?

Also, why don't you have two PE teachers? When we had portables, we received PT special teachers to help with the influx. Why doesn't your school have that option?

Yes, I would rather have them in a controlled environment, without needing access to locked doors. A para previously commented on this pretty eloquently. MCPS cannot have the building doors unsecured anymore.

School has 1 PE teacher for the 50 kids in the period. Blame MCPS for that.

Have you ever volunteered at recess? If so, then you have surely seen challenges keeping them in line. If you haven't seen these issues, then I want to move to your school.

What school district are you in? Honestly, this is so shocking to me and makes me so sad. I agree with you - what a terrible, terrible idea. I can't imagine growing up and never being outside for recess??

Please. By sending my kid to public school, I save 40K a year, enough to pay for any outdoor enrichment, tutor or travel activity imaginable. Fussing over the location of a once a week PE class is stupid. Half the time it's too cold or too hot to go out anyway.

NP. We are at a Gaithersburg ES and my kids have outdoor PE often.

Not the PP, but I have one in private and they go out unless it is pouring. They play in snow, light rain, cold weather and hot weather. MCPS 32 degrees policy (including wind chill) is a joke. Privates have recess everyday and PE 4x a week too. But moving along....

What outdoor enrichment are you doing? My one in public ES gets home about 10min to sunset in the winter. How do you get your child outside for enrichment in the dark? Do they play under the lights somewhere? I can't stand when they are inside all day because it was sunny but "only 30 degrees" so they sit inside and watch TV instead. I would love for even that one week PE to be outside no matter what the temp. There are kids seriously not outside all day every day 5 days a week from Nov-March. It must be the "I want a controlled environment parents" that prefer unhealthy kids staring at screens.

Elementary PE teachers have just one class of kids (24 in our school).

If middle and high school PE classes can be held outside, then why not elementary?

Our school combines two classes for PE. It is at least 50 kids and one PE teacher. Our PE teacher is fantastic, but it is really, really tough to keep that many kids in line.

This has been the case since K at our school. Always a combination of two classes for PE and for indoor recess. It's ridiculous, IMO, but not much they can do as MCPS would rather spend money on other BS expenses, rather than additional staff for our ES.

Are you in MCPS? There is no way you are in MCPS if you don't understand the challenges that ESs face.

Teachers are in a really, really tough spot. There is focus on PBIS, and a focus on not punishing kids. So, there aren't really many consequences teachers can implement and the students know this. Agree with the other PP. If you've ever been around at recess, or volunteered for Field Day, it is insanity. And, not much teachers can do. We've had kids get into fights during PE!
