Have you ever been to a Socialist country? They are AMAZING. I lived in the UK for 5 years and it was not hell at all. And if you mean like Jesus doesn't like socialists...you should read the Acts of the Apostles. Jesus was basically a Communist. "And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity. |
We don't need to look to other countries. Read Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State, and Utopia outlining minimal, night-watchman state. |
So, no developed country with small government? Not a single one? |
The Vatican. Have a bunch of idiots donate all their money to pay for everything. No Taxes. |
Right, were going to undo everything and create the world's first mini-archist state out of a book. And people think liberals have some wild ideas. ![]() |
It's not creating a state from scratch, from the state of nature like John Rawls. Obviously you didn't read philosophy. Nozick starts from where we are. |
Japan |
I guess as a citizen, it is not self-evident why being the most "powerful" nation is the #1 goal. |
Portugal too. And they have had one of the biggest % increases in social spending over the past 40 years. |
Um I'd like real policy examples, not utopian writings. |
Tell me more. What I've heard is Japan's lack of welfare support & immigration has lead to a catastrophic aging nation. |
High suicide rate, too. Especially among men. |
Actually, I've read a ton of philosophy including Rawls and Nozick. Rawls uses an updated version of Enlightment social contract theory. It's a philosophical construct, not an actual state of nature from which to create something. When the founding fathers started the United States they used social contract theory, but they based their new society on British and colonial models. Rawls likewise seeks a justification for our present system allowing redistribution of wealth as well as changing it a more equitable direction. On the other hand, Nozick posits a society that is radically different from the one we have and for which there is no prior model. |
If you add the % of GDP we spend on private healthcare to what we pay in taxes, we have a higher burden than Australia and Canada, and are about equal to the United Kingdom.
The socialism for me but not for thee crowd (mostly Boomers) would get apoplexy at the idea of their Medicare getting taken away. But it does lead to an interesting conclusion - in the US, at least, social safety net programs that are given to everyone have a broad base of support. Means-tested programs are detested by the folks making $1 over the lmit. |
LoL. Jesus was not basically a communist. Communism does what it does with a gun to your head. You have no choice. Do much misinformation. |
