TV and inside recess

Anyway, the overcrowded nature of the schools is the problem. If they could use the gym for dodgeball or soccer or just running laps, it wouldn’t be so bad.

Oh bullshit. You can 2 packs of gloves for $1 at the dollar store and every thrift shop has coats for $5 or below. That doesn’t include free coat drives all over the county. We are talking 30 minutes outside in mostly 40 degree days in the winter. How do poor people survive in the Maine, Minnesota, Canada, etc...

32 degrees as the cut off is awful. It should be 20 degrees. What a bunch of wimps. Kids play outside in all sorts of weather. They are not going to get hypothermia. If they are too cold, they walk laps for 30min in the halls instead. Guarantee they would have proper outerwear the next day.

Kids need fresh air, exercise, and vitamin D, especially in the winter when it gets dark so early. It is the lazy ass paras that always want indoor recess.

Walking laps in the hallway? You just want instruction to stop because of the noise?

I assume every parent who complains about this is outside on the playground with their kids before and after school right?

Are you in MCPS?

The MCPS ES classrooms have a Promethean board in each classroom. It's not a separate TV. So, the aides put something on during indoor recess. Either a movie, or a Magic Schoolhouse. Kids don't have to watch it, but it's on. But, no, it's not a TV, per se. Just the big Promethean board screen. Plus Chromebooks.

It's not always the aides. I've been asked to sub for indoor recess and the classroom teachers already have a show on the Promethean Board before I arrive.

That’s true! The Promethean board is there, so the aides and teachers use it. All. The. Time.

Well, our aftercare provider has dibs on the playground and blacktop for before and aftercare, so kids are not even allowed to play outside at school. My kids do get outside in our yard or shooting hoops in the driveway, but twenty minutes outside would be nice anyway.

And agree that the temp needs to be down at 25 or something. Or up to the principal’s discretion. It can be 25 and sunny and feel pretty warm on the blacktop.

Asked my fourth grader if they ever show movies on the promethean board during recess and she said never. I asked about previous years and she said they have never done that. (Of course, they do let them play on the chromebooks, so I'm not sure that's better.)

It’snot usually movies. They watch a show. Sometimes Magic Treehouse or Wild Kratts. Ask about shows soecifically. And of course, GoNoodle. But at least they are moving around with that!

It's the same thing but just more expensive.

She was insistent that the promethean board is never on. On chromebooks, they play games (Animal Jam, etc) but don't watch shows.

I think kids need to be outside more. I would have done outdoor/forest K if it was available for my child. One advantage of the private ES my daughter attended was that recess was held unless it was below freezing, even in light rain and flurries. The downside was that teachers didn’t always make sure the children wore coats, hats, scarves, and gloves or that these items made it back inside at the end of recess. As a third grader, my daughter often took me back to the neighborhood park to try to find lost outerwear.

Screens are hard to avoid with indoor recess.
