+1 My sister lives in another state and her kids went back last week, on Thursday.

But none of you think that school is free daycare, right?

I'm the PP that wrote that parents like you are why I quit teaching public school.

According to FFX website, https://www.fcps.edu/news/fairfax-county-school-board-adopts-2018-19-standard-school-year-calendar

They announced that it would start on a Tuesday December 15, 2017. Since you love to count how many days for teachers- that was a whopping 248 days ago, and you didn't plan for care. Sounds like your problem, not theirs. Stop projecting your disdain for having to spend time with your children onto those teachers.

I don't care what day of the week they start on, but I also really hate the combined open house/back to school night. It is so chaotic and why must every school have it at the same exact time on Thursday???

Every school does it on Thursday? At the same time?

But that CAN'T be, the nasty horrible lazy teachers at OP's school are the ONLY ONES WHO DECIDED.

Not OP, but last year our school sent out a survey to parents and teachers to vote on the combined open house--back to school thing and they SAY the combo one. I'm a bit suspicious but also don't really care BUT all the schools in our area also do everything at the same time Thursday and that is difficult.

What is your normal before / after care plan?

I only need after school care. We are on the waiting list for SACC. Our after school babysitter is not available all day because has college classes in the morning. I ended up taking the week vacation alone this week with the children. DH worked. When we get back on Sunday, DH will take Monday off to be with the children. There's no way, our employers would have approved vacation day for Monday after being off the previous week. Not sure why FCPS couldn't have the staff start a day earlier and opened schools on Monday.

Your employer won't approve more than one week of vacation?!?!

They prefer that I don't take more than 1 week off at a time. Not everyone has flexible employment. Some people don't even have vacation pay.

OOOOH. Like... teachers.

You probably post on here when your darling children have their teacher get a substitute for a day, too.

I don't understand why they had to impact Labor Day for four days. If they need more time they should take it and let the kids start on September 4th. We all know FCPS will close for four days anyway the first time there is a stiff breeze.

Nope. First, not free. Second, I expect them to teach my kids things where I expected daycare to keep them fed, let them nap and change their diapers.

I wish that elementary, middle, and HS in the same pyramid would coordinate Open House times. If you have children of different ages, you’ll really have to rush around to get to each school.

School is not daycare. Use your normal caregiver.

This is not the same across FCPS. In my pyramid, all three schools have different OH times and different BTS nights.
