Anyone ever lease a car and buy it at the end of the lease?

To me it falls in the category of different strokes for how you spend extra money. We spend big on vacations, other people spend big on meals out, other people don't like to drive 10 year old cars. If you are in the last group leasing may or may not make sense.

How many cars last ten years or 140,000 miles anyway without major expenditures?

Every good car?

Coworker is cheap and has 3 used cars. He's gone to the mechanic 6 times in the past 3 months

Most people who lease cars either can’t afford to buy cars or are too good to drive a car more than 3 years old. So I doubt many do this.

My VW Golf. 17 yrs, ~290,000 miles. And it was still running just fine and in great condition when I parted with it (ugh, didn't want to, still miss it). Purchased new, $15,000.
