Main reason is that the breakfast counter was in between the laundry room and the kitchen. It formed a narrow hallway from sunroom to the dining/kitchen area. I agree removing that laundry room could open the whole thing up, but I do not think it would happen soon.
Initially we were thinking leaving the cabinets and countertop untouched, then it gradually crept into changing them all. Since we were removing all of those, I thought it was the chance to reconfigure the layout instead of putting the new cabinets and countertop exactly the same as before. I thought the island (we intent to put 60" width island) parallel to the sink wall, somewhere in between. Essentially shift the breakfast counter space 90 degree and seperate it from the wall, so that people can access the kitchen from more directions. roughly like this pix, may move the island location a round.

Please feel free to suggest better location/orientation of the island.

| New to the renovation world here - what software are you using to generate these 3D designs? |
| When you take stuff out of the fridge you need a spot to put it, so the island's good in that respect. (The area between the fridge and stove is too small). |
That’s pretty much how my kitchen it laid out and I love it. The differences are I have a window above my sink, I have a corner pantry in the space between my stove and sink, and my island is much longer. Ditch the peninsula and add an island. My MIL kitchen’s is like yours is now, and mine feels so much bigger with the island. My only suggestion is to make the island as long as you can. Mine is almost as long as the counter on the other side. The counter top curves outward to leave a nice seating area. We have four barstools at ours and added shelves on each end. The shelves on the stove end hold my cook books. It fits 5 lower cabinets and five drawers. I though it would be over kill when we were designing our house, but it’s where we eat most of our meals and it’s a great buffet area and drink space when we are hosing. Don’t do a small island if you can help it and move it closer to the sink side and line it up so it’s more centered with your oven. |
| Relocate W/D and turn island to face same direction as peninsula. |
