‘I Feel Pretty’ and the Rise of Beauty-Standard Denialism

I think the whole body image travesty has been over sold. Look at all the posts here where everyone is reminded they're too frumpy to criticize X or reminded that no fifty is not the new forty. I think beauty is just like every other subjective quality, it is natural to over estimate oneself, and women do it all the time. I definitely catch myself doing it, I see other women do it. Yes, women self-deprecate and nitpick, but we all know how often that is fishing for compliments or just sets up a humblebrag. I know plenty of women who are pretty damn pleased with themselves, and I'm tired of this same old article being re-printed.

Thank you for this refreshing dose of common sense.

Studies have shown that women get happier as they get older. They are clearly not letting any of this nonsense get in the way. Most of the women I know (mid forties) have busy lives and lots of accomplishments and feel pretty good about themselves. I think the only people obsessing about their looks don’t have anything more important to think about.
