Barbara? Barbra?

It is my mothers name and she hates to be called Barbie. The problem with Barbie is it such an ultra feminine name. I'm not sure what they would call you if you turned out to be a tomboy.

I don't use those terms, either, for the same reason. Barf.

And Barbara, not Barbra.

In all of my life I have never heard someone called ‘Barbie’ and I’ve known many Barbs. Where does your mom live exactly & why do they call her something that she doesn’t like?

I don’t like people to call me by my full name - I am called a shortened nickname - and so no one does. Simple.

I have. But she went by Barbie. Barbie is what she wanted to be called.

My mom is in her 70s and she belongs to a book club where there are three women named Barbara. So they go by Barbara, Barb, and Barbie. I don't think that if you named your daughter that today she Would ever find herself in a class with three other barbaras.
And I mention the feminine thing because my mom is not particularly girly and that is why she dislikes being called Barbie

I very much prefer to be called Barbie over Barbara. It’s no worse than Cathy for Catherine.

One of the most tomboy women I knew, our high school tennis couch, was a Barb.
