fairness of allowing change of school assignment to overcrowded MCPS

I think OP must be at Oakland Terrace. They are way over capacity. Are they scheduled to have a new school built? They do have small class sizes though.

Are they really called "learning cottages"?

Must be Oakland Terrace.

OP Here. Yes, we are at Oakland Terrace. (And I actually did say in a previous post that we were in the downcounty constortium).

Yes, they are. Even the kids (DC in 2nd grade) know this is laughable. I guess "trailer" sounds too, I don't know, trashy?

Not OP, but I found this interesting: for last school year, Oakland Terrace was second only to Harmony Hills for overcrowding. Both are in the Downcounty consortium, but it looks like there's a construction plan for Harmony Hills. The other schools that are 150% or more overcapacity include Fairland (S. Spring), Georgian Forest (S. Spring), Rock View (Kensington), N. Chevy Chase (CC), Fox Chapel (Clarksburg) and Jackson Road (S. Spring). Five of the 8 appear to have construction plans but I don't see anything for Oakland Terrace (although it was renovated in 1993), Georgian Forest (renov 1995) or N Chevy Chase (reno 1995). Another note about the overcrowded schools is that some of them have Head Start. Of course full day K was added in MoCo since those schools were constructed so there are a lot more bodies. In total, 56% of MCPS elementaries were overcapacity last year-73 of 130. 34 were 125% of capacity or more.

Hi - I was the OP who said her child isn't yet school age, but that I live near a good school yet our local kids are bused to a poorer neighborhood with an underperforming school. I just want to say two things. First, to whomever suggested I live in Bethesda - totally off. I don't even know the school she referenced, but she's got it wrong. Way off. Second, I want to apologize to the OP to the extent my post sounded confrontational. Clearly everyone is facing their own challenges when it comes to their local schools. The school I'm assigned to probably falls within the bottom 2 percent of Mont. Count. Schools when it comes to just about every yardstick so I've become very sensitive to the issue, but that's no reason to minimize the significance of overcrowding. It's a real concern, and to the extent my comments somehow minimized that, I apologize. I wish all of us luck in getting mont. county to improve all of our schools. We should all be on the same team when it comes to that.
