Do mostly middle class kids snowboard, really wealthy do the more patrician skiing?

In the 90s, snowboarding was seen as cooler, but that's not true anymore.

Snowboarding has annoying aspects (doing bindings every run, having to skate on flats), and skiing does not.

Snowboarding seems to draw...for lack of better words, slackers and douchebags and stoners. Is that accurate?

Hmmm, the image it exudes does give that allure.

Such BS. Been skiing for over 30 years and was nearly killed 2 weeks ago by a young snowboarder who was going too fast and did not have control.

Same here. I'm an expert skier and I hate snowboarders.

You two hate ALL snowboarders?

That's pathetic.

Well I'd hope they'd try both and do whatever they preferred.

Who are the people who don't like cold and are afraid of sports where your feet are not in direct contact with the ground and would prefer to stay inside and watch Netflix and drink coffee? I am that kind.

Op is just stirring the pot

+1. I just skip straight to après on ski trips.

Ski gear is far more expensive than snowboarding gear that’s why. The brokies can usually only afford to snowboard and so they do (nothing wrong with it). The only annoying part is that they pretend they do it because it’s cooler and not because they can’t afford to ski enough to get any good.😊

Yes fool

I’m part of the 1% and don’t give a flying rat’s arse what you think of my choices and habits, OP. I love snow, but I prefer mountains in the summer and beaches in winter. Fewer humans, you see.

You have it wrong. It’s not a division of wealth and non-wealth—it’s youth vs old. Old people only ski.

You have to be joking, right?

I’m 45 (not young) and after 20 years on my skis, I almost exclusively snowboard - and I’m a woman. After multiple injuries to my knees and hips, I find snowboarding better for the active elderly, like me.

My kids exclusively ski and have done so since they were 3. I do give them the option to snowboard every year, but all 4 have said no because they don’t want to go back to square one. They get about 15 days on the mountain each year (Breck/Vail/Keystone), so it’s not like they lack an opportunity.

OP you’re nuts to think this is a class thing. Skiing (and snowboarding) is UMC/UC no matter how you slice it, unless you live near a resort - and even then it’s still very MC.

Well, I'm an expert snowboarder and I hate skiers. Why do you all stop at the top of the hill in a straight line and never leave enough room for a boarder to get through? Why do you not understand on steeper slopes we need a little more room? Why do you not ever look back up the mountain to see who is coming before you head off? Only people who have ever taken me out are skiers.

That said, I see plenty of douchey behavior from both skiers/boarders - particularly large groups of young boys. But, I find the skiers to be much less cognizant of the space needed by others. And yes, I ski too - but boarding is easier on my aging body!

You must be a crappy skier on blue runs then. I worry about getting hit by anyone on crowded blue runs. When you get good enough you can go higher and you don’t have to worry about this. And if you get really good, head to the backcountry where you are the only one.

Not true. I have very expensive ski gear AND I have very expensive snowboarding gear. I probably spent more on snowboard gear because it needs to be replaced more often - maybe I trash it more in the terrain park? I also have 2 split boards for different conditions and only one AT ski set up.
