how much do you spend each month on sports?

man, I thought I was splurging by paying for weekly Tollefson group swim lessons (averages about $200/month). All those private lessons seem excessive. I would think you could get pretty much the same results with a monthly private lesson and using the rest as practice time to focus on practicing what you learned during the last lesson.

I think most of you are insane and wasting your money.

I think it depends on their goals. Like the PP whose kids have their eyes on the olympics... I don't think that's a waste of money. I mean, it's basically a career and life dream.

Agreed...

$375 x 10-12 months - sounds like a rip off to me unless this price includes a bunch of additional outside training

My kids play tennis too but it's "only" $75/private lesson, $36/group lesson, and $22/match play. This is on a weekly basis for two kids. So tennis for the month is around $532.

The boys also play soccer which is $90 for 6 weeks for a weekly average of around $15 (x2). The monthly average is $120.

Swimming is around the same $15 a week (x2). The monthly average is $120.

Then we also have a daughter who does figure skating, gymnastics, and ballet. The monthly average for ballet is $62. The monthly average for gymnastics is $100. For ice skating she does one private lesson ($20) and one group lesson. Monthly average is $125.

Add it all up and we are at $1059 for three kids who are 9, 7, and 5.

Gosh, thats awesome. Even our rec leagues are 300/sport (usually 8 weeks). 9 YO gold crown basketball was $440 for the season. With three kids, it adds up quickly.

3 teens/tween - travel soccer and baseball, sprinkled with some other rec sports

Travel baseball is about $4500-5000/year, including cage time. Not including private coaching which is ad hoc, and not including summer camp. Those two can add another $2500-3500 depending on the year and how long the slump is

Ripken baseball camp, for example, is around $1800 for a week. The good news is, there's no transportation expense to get him there.

Travel soccer is $2500 for the club plus another $400 in equipment. Tournament travel expenses can run another $1500-3500 a year depending on the age of the kid and the level of play. Summer is additional, camps can run from $350-7000 a week (our oldest goes to Europe for 10 days and the program fee is around $6500 plus their travel expenses plus spending $$)

Where do you live? We are in Fairfax and our rec league averages about $150/sport per kid.
