Actually there is new development in the West End, on Pickett, at King and Beauregard, in Del Ray, and of course in Potomac Yard (also in Eisenhower East, but you might consider that an extension of Old Town). The "push for affordable housing" is just an attempt to use committed AH to offset the steady loss of market AH as the City moves more upscale. We don't need to rid ourselves of poor and working class people, and we won't. But the ratings of our schools will be impacted, at least to some degree. |
Thirty some years in Alexandria is enough to end the saying the "ratings of our school will be impacted, at least to some degree". I suspect you ACPS Board or Council or private citizen group on "affordable housing". When is enough poor ACPS ratings actually "enough"? Thirty years? We are the laughing stock of affluent NoVa with one of the smallest student bodies. For Alexandria median income, check out the Census. That's where that "high median income" phrase comes from. When are high property taxes enough? $1.13 per $100 assessed for FY 2018. A near ~10% income. That is right up there. Real estate in Alexandria City isn't selling like hotcakes in Arlington or Fairfax or Loudoun County, so why is it assessed so much? On potential? Really? Why not on stark reality? When does our Council, Planning, Zoning and ACPS just admit we are falling farther behind than Falls Church City, Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington County? Council members say we must compete. If you want to compete, we must address our public school system so people will get what they pay for and deserve. Fair is fair. Our tax code is up for discussion. Why move here with languishing ACPS? Let's face reality. |
| ^^ sorry, "a nearly ~10 % increase (not income). |
Want a change in the City? Vote in some Republicans next time around for City Council. Also, the City has the highest FARMs rate in the whole area in their schools. Be willing to speak up and admit that you are unhappy with such a high FARMs rate and that it is negatively impacting education for all kids. |
| How will voting republican lower the farms rate? |
| People tolerate the substandard services at Champagne prices because Alexandria City is a brand. A name brand among the wealthiest residents. |
Ah, this is Alexandria Republicans posting here. Gotcha. That's why the contradictory posts - first the problems with the schools are due to incompetence - then when its pointed out that we have poor people, a rant against the presence of poor people. News for you, we are a city, we have had poor and working class people since we were founded, we are not like places that were farms until they suburbanized. Though I would point out that Arlington and Fairfax also have committed AH programs, and the amount of market rate AH in the City is declining. But if you want a suburb where the goal is to encourage the affluent and discourage the poor from living there, you could try, maybe Loudoun? That is not the City of Alexandria and its not going to be. Values here are different. That is one reason I moved here. Go have fun with Townsend Van Fleet. |
Van Fleet?! What are you? 65? |
