Contract $ for teachers not available until December??

Wait. You are bragging about getting paid for not having time to collaborate or plan for your students. You got an extra 10 grand- but what did the kids get? A stressed out teacher, who didn't have enough time to plan/breathe/pee and a crowded classroom.

I didn't read it as bragging. It sounded like she/he was called on to metaphorically put out fires and pitch in to manage through crises -- which she/he did, and was compensated for monetarily. I don't think the PP is unaware of the trade offs and isn't suggesting that is a sustainable or ideal approach.

Okay roll your eyes if you want but it’s the truth.

In DC teachers with a bachelors make $68 in their 10th year. Plus the chance of a big bonus.

In fairfax teachers make $61

Alexandria City is $67

PWCS $58

And not to mention there isn’t a powerful union backing up teachers in Virginia. DC teachers get money if their planning time is taken up. That would never ever happen where I teach.

I understand your plight. I hated every minute in DCPS, but the money was great. With all of the teachers who were quitting midyear, our principal had no choice but to make sure that we got every dime of admin premium. I can't remember if it was $35 or $45 an hour, but I brought home at least an extra $500 every check. I covered classes every single day during my planning period, went to every "optional" Saturday PD, and logged every hour for staying after school until 4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for tutoring. I also got paid an extra $40 for having more than the maximum number of students in one of my classes.

With all of those bonuses, I took at least a $10k paycut when I left DCPS. I'm definitely feeling the impact financially, but the peace of mind is worth every time.

Thank you for sharing.

I was the one who brought up Virginia, not because I think Dc is some uptopia but because it isn’t any better when you cross the state line into VA. I saw dcps teachers in here saying they were going to use the extra money to leave and I was just wondering where. Because there is no real union able to fight for Virginia teachers. I am not lying when I say I missed out on a few years of a step increaseS because there was no money. I should be getting more money based on the years I have taught but we were in a pay freeze.

Maybe it’s better in Maryland and if that’s the case and dc teachers are unhappy, I absolutely think they should move. I’m not saying anyone should stay in dc. I was just bringing up that the grass isn’t greener in VA.

+1 Thank you! No one wants to talk about this part of the game though!
Anonymous wrote:Another former DCPS teacher, its true you will NEVER see a check for lost preptime. There are surrounding districts/counties where you can make just as much or very near the DCPS teacher salary. I don't know why people keep claiming they continue to work for DCPS for the bonus, half of the time they're no closer to a bonus & they struggle with a 3 ring circus. Education in DCPS is deplorable, half of the time, teachers/admin use DCPS for the free pre-k (though they don't live in the district) and then they enroll their children elsewhere. My former DCPS principal sent her children to boarding schools in the NE.

Oh and the WTU is powerless, come to MCPS if you want to see a real union function.

Wait what? PP isn’t bragging. She/he is saying she did get compensated for missing planning. It was stated earlier that dc teachers would never see that $.

Sounds like you worked for a principal with integrity. Many principals in DCPS lie and cheat their way to central office.

Oh let's talk about missed steps. How about when a new principal arrives and decides to make his or her mark by intentionally targeting teachers that they consider dispensable because another teacher that brown noses doesn't like or feels intimidated by the other teacher so that targeted teacher loses a step due to lower rating that year. Or when a principal retaliates against the whole staff because he or she got pushed out of the school due to bullying and harassment charges filed collectively by the teachers. DCPS is a cesspool of political games and collusion. It is probably one of the most corrupt education systems out there.

Not PP but you don’t think that happens everywhere in education?

Agree with 1st poster, look teaching in general is a sh**sh** right now. But what DCPS teachers are saying is despite the money, teachers still leave in droves for MD and VA. DC is roughly69 sq miles, the home of Ed Reform, and for numerous reasons they still can't get it right or keep teachers. Clearly, money is not enough. Now they are renegading on the contract, and even and guidance coming out of the IMPACT & LEAL office is laughable, if it wasn't so sad, as it impacts teachers lives.

Well the people who screwed this up report to the mayor.

Political pressure is needed. Council members to mayor.

Call the Wash Post and call your member and make some noise.
