Honest question, not snarky -- why pay so much for these when you can get the same look in sterling silver?

NP: I’m allergic to many metals — probably nickel. So far I can wear platinum, titanium and niobium. While not all sterling silver is the same, it’s less expensive for me to invest in earrings that I know I can wear than to buy multiple pairs of less expensive earrings that end up irritating my ears.

For less expensive studs or small hoops that won't irritate your ears, look for gold vermeil. It's hypoallergenic (no nickel) but since it's a sterling silver base with a 14k gold plate, it's much less expensive than solid gold. I have pairs from both Mejuri and Shashi (from Shopbop) and they never irritate. I have incredibly sensitive skin and almost gave up on earrings because I felt like my options were so limited. But since I discovered gold vermeil and can wear a lot more variety.

I wear my 1 ct diamond studs everyday. I take them out 1) to clean and put back in 2) when i wear fancier earrings for parties/occasions. They cost about $1,800 and Ive had them since 2011; at this point it works out to 56 cents per day.

IMO the frugal thing is to buy diamond earrings and wear them, not have them sit in a box in your bedroom.

Can some of you put in the links to which exact ones you purchased?

I have small diamond studs that I wear daily. My guess is they are around 0.25 carat but I’m not sure - screw backs.

I have worn these daily since 2008 - my husband gave them to me for second wedding anniversary but I have no link - I know he bought them from a relative jeweler in NYC.

Im the blue nile poster and this is exactly why I wear those in platinum. Most metals except platinum and 18k gold make my ear inflamed burning, itching, oozing etc... its worth it to me to get something I know will cause zero problems. These have held up wonderfully and are still pretty after 5 years of daily wear.

Tarnish. I never buy sterling because of this. Yes you can dip it, but it is pain plus the added chemical exposure

why not wear the diamonds every day??? The only reason I dont wear my diamond studs every day is my sensitive skin is irritated by the screw-posts. I also have nice fake ones from QVC..........

For years I’ve worn the smallest pair of diamonds set in platinum studs and a larger pair of sapphires set in platinum from Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti Diamonds by the Yard collection. I also have some studs from Blomdahl that I use for swimming and when losing an earring might be a concern.

My DD has fake diamond studs by Swarovski and they look amazing. So amazing I’m tempted to get myself a pair in a bigger size than my real diamonds. (But not too big to look fake, ha!)

Same here except I can do 14k gold with no issues.
