Middle School Choices Next Year

Great things, there are issues with the building, the started late according to a parent I bumped into the other day.

13:05 I am talking about Latin.

I think those issues are with Latin. Can you someone update everyone on what is happening with the building at Wash Latin? I thought they were all going to be on 16th st but now i see an Upshur campus for 5-8 grades.

They have a new building on 16th street, down from the old British School on Decator which they still use for the higher grades. Apparently the DC permit didn't come through in time and they started a day or two late. I think it's been resolved now.

It is resolved; the two campuses are both on 16th Street (Upper and Lower). Nice big classrooms--a group of parents were there on Saturday beautifying. Should be a good site for the school to grow.

Deal just had their Back to School night Friday. Very impressive. The energy in the place is electric! I can see why my DD loves going to school everyday.

new poster here- I totally agree with 1356. Deal so far surpassed our hopes- it was great to leave back to School Night and feel like our kid is getting a great education. I grew up in DC and was wary about Deal due to its history, but my gosh, it is really wonderful.

One of our son's history assignment at Latin (grade 7) is fiction and fact. He selects his own historical fiction novel to read --and then will compare/contrast with time-lines, mapping etc.from the period portrayed. He is pretty excited about this assignment. Loves his music class so far as well. And going gangbusters in math--truly a strong program with the pre-Algebra and amazing, insightful teacher. It is shaping up to be a good year. We are happy with the new campus, and the bus to and from Tenley has made the commute super-easy.

I'd love to hear more about the bus to and from Tenley. Are there school buses serving other areas? Any pick-ups near Dupont Circle or Woodley Park?

Deal is truly amazing. As PPs have said, "Back to School Night" blew me away too. My kid is getting a top notch education from wonderful, talented teachers in a beautiful facility. There were a lot of unknowns before the year started, in part because it was hard to get a sense of what the finished building would be like. You should see it now! There are things that go along with big schools, like metal detectors etc. but a small price to pay. We feel so excited for our child.

Can a current Deal parent provide more information about class sizes? How large can a classroom get? Someone mentioned as few as 12 but that's probably not the norm.

My 6th grade child's largest class is math @ 23 and smallest class is english @ 14. There is no guarantee of having small classes but we were pleasantly surprised by the actual class sizes for our child.

They did a parent survey during the summer to find good bus hubs. Not sure if there is one near Woodley or not though there were questions that seemed geared to folks closer to Connecticut Ave.--I believe there is one by Capitol Hill. We pay a nominal fee for to and fro service; seems rapid and reliable so far. I would contact the school if you have transport concerns. Since the school is up 16th by Carter Barron, public bus is easy from there too.

Unaffiliated parent here. If we could get into Latin, I can't imagine anything else - other than a distant second place.

Good luck OP.

How hard is it to get into Latin? There were 60 spots in 5th this year. Does anyone know how many applications?

Is it a wash after 5th, in terms of getting in?
