what color hardwoods would you put in this MCM home?

would it make more sense to try slate or some kind of tile instead of hardwood floors?

We’re in our second MCM home with tons of wood and both have floors in dark glue down vinyl. It actually looks perfect even though it’s not very 2021

One was black and one was dark gray

I mean, you'd have to live under a rock to not realize that the design of that house, once fixed up, is basically the content of 90% of design and style blogs, magazines, etc these days. You don't have to like it personally, but you have to be pretty obtuse to suggest that someone who just bought this house -- who therefore clearly does appreciate the style -- should be painting over the original MCM features.

Post is old but +1000. The MCM house is still great, you'll have to excuse the posters who can't see past the see of boring cookie cutter colonials they like to post.

And seconding the suggestions for walnut.

I like the previous suggestions to match the ceiling or go just a bit lighter. Other ideas that stay in keeping with the mid century style would be cork, some sort of stone, and I might also suggest tiles that look like terrazzo or cement. Joseph Eichler homes are obviously a little different than the specific version of MCM that OP posted years ago, but the same spirit is there.

Saying some of these people like colonials is even a little too much credit for them. They like big empty black and white caverns and “pops” of color and literally zero warmth, personality or style.

We have a similar home and we put wood on the ceiling that matches the floors. Our wood is lighter than in this home, but I must say it looks fantastic! Matches our stair railings, too.

We have a similar situation and the floors are a beautiful earthy red terracotta stone tile. Some parts of the house have a very light wood. Personally I like the tile with the wood.

Anyone who thinks this house should have wide plank oak flooring is nuts. That trendy stuff doesn't belong in a 1970s contemporary.

Disagree. You don’t have to live in a museum if you live in an old home and sometimes trendy stuff looks great in an older home.

OP posted this almost 4 years ago. Probably not responding to anything here. It’s not like social media where you get notifications on your post.

If the ceiling had beams, I think the white painted ceilings are nice like this:

However, in this case, i don't think it works as well.

THIS!!

If you match the floor to the ceiling - it's too dark and monochromatic.
If you choose another color for the floor - it won't match.
