Rave for Virginia Hospital Center

I wouldn't give birth at a facility that allows OBs to induce with Cytotec. OMG, PP! Horrible.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous.

I'm looking for a new hospital to deliver our next baby because we just moved to the area. I want to hear about both good and bad experiences. It has nothing to do with being a 'negative person'. If your experience was great, that's wonderful! Share it and be grateful that things went so well for you. But, don't fault the other posters who didn't have as good an experience as you.

PP, that's really rude to say. Did you read the title to this thread, or her original message? It is someone posting about her positive experience and wanting to share her positive feelings, NOT someone asking for "both good and bad experiences." If you are looking for a new hospital and want to know that, start your own thread. Stop calling people ridiculous when they are just trying to contribute with a POSITIVE message that responds to the thread.

But by this logic, PP's positive experiences were not appropriate either.

So OP I guess all we can say is: good for you! (Seriously, it's great to gear a nice story.)

That's actually not the same logic at all, but I am not going to turn a positive thread into something negative, as apparently some people want to do.

Oh, give me a break. Yes, OP is posting about her wonderful VHC experience. That's great. PP is right, I guess by your logic, the only correct response is "YAY, OP!!". Which, I definitely do feel. I think it's great when a mom has a positive birth experience.

However, this is a PUBLIC forum. People come on here all the time. To read about other mom's experiences, or to learn about area hospitals/OBs. It's ridiculous to think that every single person that delivers at VHC has a great, wonderful experience like the OP. It's good for expectant moms to know that there might be another side to the story.

Why? I will be induced with Cytotec by one of the favorite doctors mentioned on this board a lot. I know the risks and that it is off label use and that it is contraindicated in pregnancy. The pharmaceutical company that makes it issued a statement about ten years ago saying not to use it to induce labor but the American College of OBGYNs issued a statement just a couple of months after that (also about ten years ago) saying it is safe to use and people have been using it for that long now and studies report risks of using it but not any greater than other drugs (picotin, etc). Because it is being so widely used to induce labor already, there will be no additional profit/incentive for the drug company to get this drug approved by the FDA for inducing labor at this point so it will never happen. I researched this throughly and I'm comfortable with it.

So no, just because VHC lets doctors use Cytotec does not mean it is a bad hospital.

12:19, I am the PP that was induced using it (w/o prior research). I am curious what you prefer about cytotec over cervidil. I have read that it is less manageable, and my experience definitely supports that (Doc said she'd never seen anyone react like I did-- didn't ask her to elaborate at the time). Apart from it being cheaper, what are the benefits/risks, in your opinion?

Cytotec in addition to cervical ripening (softening and thinning) also dilates you in inducing labor. Cervidil does not dilate so you may have to use other drugs. That is the primary advantage. If your cervix is not open while you are having contractions, it will hurt. Cytotec, since it opens up the cervix is less likely to cause you to have contractions against a closed cervix.
