Please explain to us, dear OP, exactly how one such as you views this remark as "racist."

Southeast is, factually, the poorest part of the city. (Did you not know that?) Lower income children, factually speaking, do have more social and emotional needs than the average child who lives in a more affluent area. This is true whether we are speaking of persons who are black, white, brown, green or yellow.

A better question is why you find this so inflammatory.

as a high SES parent with a child with "social emotional needs", kindly stfu.

Curious, what was his professional background? Education, psychology, or what?

Who knows but he's getting the big bucks and they've been working on this all summer, so he should have done his homework and learned something about how to present and talk about SEL without offending people

I think it was a member of the Trump Administration speaking. #MAGA y'all!

I think the rxn was not helpful to the cause. Screaming/yelling/walking out. Really? I am a DCPS teacher and this is embarrassing. Did the presenter use a dumb term that shows his biases- yes!! But is shouting & stomping an appropriate way to adress the issue? Nope.
Adults talk- fools rage.

People were mad he tried to move on and when people tried to explain why, he shut them down. That's when people got angry. And then he kept back tracking and making excuses which escalated the situation. It was handled poorly on both sides, but I understand the reaction after being told to be quiet and we were on a timeline and needed t move on.

He said "not just those kids in south east from broken homes."

A DCPS version of the Ludovico Technique, perhaps?

What?! Who still uses this term?

Just curious...i am assuming he was not AA. If he were, I'm imagining there wouldn't be so much outrage. Am I right?

Great question. To clarify SEL or social and emotions learning is a wonderful approach that positively that emotional health and support is the on ramp to learning in all schools. DCPS - with its shabby haphazard old fashioned and not deeply intentional clunky character Ed programs sure needs a saturated, system wide SEL approach. If that's what they are bringing in, I hope it is not drowned out in a brought ha ha. I'd like to actually hear more about the intentions of the training as it could be very exciting for DC if done right. Sadly the unfortunate word choice suggests that may not be investing properly in the training.

Oh weird. People making excuses for him instead of just saying, "that was wrong and really messed up".

When people wouldn't settle down he said it was part of the script and he was supposed to say it to touch a nerve. Another man backed him up saying it was deliberate and everyone in here sessions across the city heard the same phAse, if that were true, the nxt logical step would have been to make it a talking point and discuss it, which didn't happen. Then when he tried to apologize he said something like - I meant this session covers every child, not just those kids. Again - chaos. People storming out, yelling and being frustrated about not being heard and told to settle down by someone who clearly had no idea what he did wrong. Finally they brought in people from central office for damage control.

Sounds just like DCPS.

Oh, wait, this is teachers we're talking about....

As you said, sounds just like DCPS.
