Would you let your DC go to an away summer camp run by a different church/religion?

+1 And I do not consider myself very religious.

What are you afraid that your DC will learn?

NP Jewish poster who agrees with the other Jewish posters. And it's not that I'm afraid that DD would learn something, it's that I wouldn't want to put her in a position where she is praying in a way that counteracts our faith, like prayers involving Jesus.

I definitely like the idea of exposing my child to other religions but I'm the same as pp and would not send her to a camp that would push beliefs I strongly disagree with (i.e. evangelical Christian). I'd rather be able to address how they are batshit crazy at home and not have my child confused for a week+ without me. On the other hand, DH and I were both raised Catholic and I strongly disagree with many Catholic teachings but if the camp was geared towards elementary school age I am experienced enough with the church to feel comfortable that the hot topics wouldn't be addressed with young kids.

Jewish. DC to YMCA.

Yes. Not conservative/evangelical Christian, or fundamentalist anything.

Culturally Christian, raised Episcopalian, but agnostic with an atheist kid.

I've sent my kid to secular day camps run by religious organizations before. The camp associated with his Episcopal preschool, a sports camp at a Catholic school, a JCC camp, and a camp at a Quaker school. There were no issues at any of them.

I wouldn't send my kid to a camp whose purpose was religious (e.g. VBS or the equivalent for any religion), and there are certain religious groups (Southern Baptist, Evangelical Christian, Chabad) where I wouldn't trust that a camp wasn't going to evangelize regardless of the topic.

All this is about day camp, because that's all I've done, but if we were looking at overnight camp, my feelings would be the same.

I'm with many of the PPs. We're Catholic and I'd be fine with Jewish or mainline Protestant (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist etc.) but not evangelical. My husband allowed our then 8 year old to go along when a neighbor invited him to their church (mega church "bible based") and he was told that he had to accept Jesus Christ into his heart if he wanted to be "saved". Not going to put him in a situation where he'd get a week of that.

Nope. The purpose of a church camp is to strengthen the kids' belief in that religion. I don't want to put my kids in potentially uncomfortable situations or have confusing information thrown at them without me available to discuss it.

There are plenty of non religious camps.

Yup! I am Jewish and my child goes to an amazing Quaker sleep-away camp.

It really depends. I'm Jewish and my son went to Methodist preschool. I had a conversation with them about what they taught and was fine with the answer. Same rule with camp.

I would not send my kid to a camp that was looking to convert. I can't imagine sending a child to the camp of a different faith if the camp had specific bible study or language and liturgy lessons.

Leno camp at the JCC? Sure.

Not Leno. LEGO.

How about a camp run by the Seventh Day Adventists? if you are not Adventist?

We are technically Catholic (but I am more agnostic and my H is atheist) and we send our kids to a very religious camp run a Presbyterian church. Bible study everyday, Christian music.

Funny thing is I had no clue it was like this. But my kids love it so they continue to go.

I think it is good for kids to learn about all religions. I took my boys to a Buddhist temple and the asked questions. We talked to our neighbor who is Hindue to learn about their religion. They were at an in home daycare and the woman was Muslim, not sure what they remember about that. They have tons of Jewish friends.

They realize all religions have some good and some f'd up parts because they are all run by imperfect people.

I'd put that in the Southern Baptist/Evangelical/Chabad/JW category of organizations I don't trust not to evangelize.

My Jewish son goes to an Episcopalian school, which we love for so many reasons. However, he attends a Jewish overnight camp and I would not send him to a Christian one.

Are you saying the SDA preaches hate or just tries to convert kids at camp?
