Tim Burton remade it in 2005 with Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka. Like the book it's called Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. The original movie was made in 1971 with Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka. The movie is called Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, though. Man, I love this movie. |
Ah the water babies. I watched that one a bunch. I remember liking it -- why did you not? What was creepy about chatty chittu bang bang? Book was great it's a kids James Bond |
| I dislike that movie. Could never actually watch it, old version is creepy and new one is worse. I would always turn TV off if I saw it on. |
| Love the book; despise the creepy, ugly movies. |

I rewatched Chitty for the first time in decades not long ago and was shocked at how overtly sexual bits of the movie was, especially the scenes with the baron and baroness. It's a kid's movie! But it was all in good fun.
Enjoyed all the Dahl movies and books too. And I'm normal. Well, I think I am There's always been a dark undercurrent in the Dahl books but that was a large part of their allure.

You know what was creepy about the original?
Wonka's little boat that traveled through the psychedelic tunnel had exactly as many seats as passengers. But he had already lost 2 kids and their parents by that point...did he plan for those kids to drop off the tour? |
| i don't even think I've seen it. Or if so, I don't remember it. it always seemed kind of creepy. |
| I agree. So weird. |
|
Veruca Salt is the best character ever. Sometimes I find myself singing "Don't care how, I want it now". Another great line is "You're always making life difficult for me".
Man, she owned being a spoiled brat. Totally and completely owned it. |
| That's one of my favorite movies. The remake was Johnny Depp was unwatchable. |
Okay I looked into it. The child creeper. The wind up doll dancer. The puppet dance by dick van Dyke. Yeah it definitely was a bit odd |
I think it was clearly a test to weed out future heirs |
| I really enjoyed the original as a kid, but it was pretty dark. I can see how/why it wouldn't be broadly appealing. |

Loved the original Charlie, but not the Tim Burton version, as does my daughter. The Wizard of Oz has always been one of my favorite movies, so maybe I was just a dark kid, although I didn't really see it that way.
Roald Dahl was pretty dark in most of his books, but I think kids love his wild imagination. My kindergarten teacher read us James and the Giant Peach and I still remember it to this day, and my daughter loved Matilda, even though that one was a little too much even for me. I haven't seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in decades, but that was another favorite. I think I won't revisit it so I don't spoil it. |
Yup. Get your ass up and contribute |
