Cheap eats recommendations?

Depends on where you're located? LA has tons of cheap eats.
For subs: Bay Cities in SM.
Spitz (doner kebab) is great and has locations in little Tokyo, eagle rock, Universal City, Los Feliz.
For classic LA burgers/diners: Apple Pan in west LA, Pie & Burger in Pasadena.
Culver City: try Father's Office (also on Montana).
For Chinese, Din Tai Fung (I don't know if there are locations near where you're staying? They may be too far for you). Pine & Crane in Silverlake.
Food trucks, tacos, and ramen are everywhere. For ramen, go to Little Tokyo or Sawtelle blvd in W LA.
Downtown: visit Grand Central Market.
The Farmers Market at the Grove is also all food stalls and is fun.
If you're in Hollywood on Sunday morning, go to the Hollywood farmers market and there's lots of food there.

Where are you staying? You don't want to criss-cross the city for food....

Best beach recommendations in LA area?

Manhattan Beach and the beaches in Malibu are the best overall, but there are great beaches all along the coast so I wouldn't make a special trip. Where will you be staying?
Santa Monica beaches are likely going to be the closest to where you are, and they're okay (NOT near the SM pier though).
The water is tested regularly and you can research each beach on the Heal the Bay website. Pick an A+ spot.
