Vacation next week and elderly cat not well

We had a similar situation a couple years ago, and I ended up staying home while the husband and kids went on their trip. I could not bear asking the neighbor who cat sits to medicate him or to possibly come in and find a dead cat (and then have to call and tell me that). Moving him, either to a sitter's house or to the vet or taking him with us, would have been cruel for a cat who hated the carrier and the car.

He passed away about a month later, and, while I'm sorry I missed the trip, I am not sorry I stayed with him. I'd have worried the whole time was away and also missed out on a limited amount of time I had left with him.
