Who wrote her recommendation that would know her reading level? |

NNAT 126 CoGAT 128 GBRS Unknown (I did not realize we can ask for the score from AART teacher) DD did not get into the program and am now considering whether to take the WISC V. My eldest DS got into the program and DD is aware of it because of him. She is an avid reader and writer (her recommendation provided that she is reading at a 4th grade level) but she may not be as 'advanced' in the quantitative/math skills area. Should I appeal and take the WISC V? What are the chances for her to get in with appeal and what WISC V score? Who wrote her recommendation that would know her reading level? She goes to Kumon enrichment for reading, so I got a letter from the instructor from the center. |
She goes to Kumon for reading, I know it is probably not objective but her instructor assessment is she is reading at 4th grade level and put it in the recommendation. |
| OP here: In - Thanks for the responses. |
People send their above-grade readers to Kumon? I thought it was just for kids who struggled and needed extra help. |
It's possible that the committee thought the same thing. Maybe they were thinking that if the child needs help with reading, she might have a difficult time keeping up with the work in an AAP classroom. |

I think Kumon is designed as an enrichment not tutoring activities. |

I think they saw a kid whose parents sent her to Kumon for extra tutoring as a kid whose test scores were probably the result of "test prep".

| I don't think the rec from the Kumon tutor did you any favors. |
Maybe so, but most people think of it as being for kids who are having trouble keeping up with the work in school. |
I found out the WISC and GBRS score today NNAT 126 - 95% CoGAT 128 - 95% WISC V 126 - 96% Verbal 108 - 70% Visual Spatial 122 - 93% Fluid Reasoning 134 - 99% GBRS 11 Appeal or not appeal? |
Why not? It's clear that it's hard to predict what they will decide. If you don't appeal your child definitely isn't in, but if you appeal DC might be accepted. If you went to the trouble to have a WISC you might as well. |
We decided to take the WISC to really find out what her ability (though at the same time can use it to appeal if the scores were adequate) but given that it seems that her scores are somewhat right in the border I hesitate to spend the effort and energy if there is a higher likelihood she may not be eligible again based on the WISC V. I also ask her teacher for newer work samples and the teacher has not responded, so I do not have any more of her new work samples. |
| You'd be a fool to not try. You don't have work samples at home? You don't need the teacher. |
