Nonetheless, there the kids are. And telling their parents, "You shouldn't have had those kids, you irresponsible procreators!" isn't going to feed them. |
I think there are a lot of teachers/staff who feel cheated out of a snow day this year. This is a good way to rightfully take an extra day off! |
It's fair if you feel that way, but the way the system is set up, we rely on schools to feed the kids. Advocate for this to change - make it more reliant on private sector/churches/etc. But, since we have already set the system up this way, it's unfair to the kids to just ignore it. |
They'll be fine for a day. Maybe it will be a wake up call for their parents. |
Would your kids be fine on a day where they didn't have breakfast or lunch? And a wake-up call for the parents to do what, exactly? |
I work with many families who live in poverty and not one family has absolutely no food in their house. It may be snack food but it's food. The kids won't starve. And a wake up call for parents that not everything can be provided to them. Some things they need to be responsible for, like having food in their house in the event school closes without much notice. The way the current system works that it creates an expectation that they will be provided for and learned helplessness ensues. I don't know of one family who doesn't have multiple smart phones, X boxes, etc. They find a way for the things they want (including having more children) because often they don't have to pay for the things they need. Harsh? Yes, of course. Are there exceptions? Yes, of course. It's one day. They won't starve. |
Yeah, but for what? So you can take the day off and prove how important you are? Excuse me if my sympathy is lacking for your cause. |
What demonstration? This looks like a Day Without Work to me. Way to solidify your reputation as never having to be asked twice to close, PGCPS. Signed, PG resident with kids in private schools that are open tomorrow |
I'm not a teacher so your frustration is wasted on me, but the answer to your question is "yes". Clearly it does prove how important teachers and school staff are since school closing for one day on short notice is throwing people into a tailspin. Can't really say the same about too many other professions, and since teachers are predominately women I support them in their action. |
Exactly! A poorly thought out liberal white woman's exercise. Did you know that International women's day was started by the American Socialist Party and first celebrated in Petrograd in 1917? No of course not, liberal women don't think, they just react. Did you know it's anti-Israel. Go read wikipedia and educate yourselves. |
Absolutely zero, except that it hurts the single and dual working income families who are struggling right now to find childcare. It was thoughtless and self-indulgent and will have no impact whatsoever other than to bring disrespect to our local teachers (and so far it is just DVM, with one exception). Like National Immigrants' Day there will be no impact except that some will find they return to no jobs, or, even worse, no respect. |
"Feel cheated out of a snow day"? OMFG. Now I have heard everything.
|
I doubt you have worked with many families in poverty, as you say if you think this won't have an immediate impact on families. What about the very young children? And their single mothers who work as nannies, housekeepers, McDonald's, or other service-related fields? Just what are they supposed to do this evening when P.G. County announces this absurd event at 8 p.m.? What about FARMS meals? Do you think these people have immediate nannies to call for back-up - oh wait - those are the mothers themselves who can't get to work because of this privileged white-woman liberal protest. Unbelievably stupid. |
+1000. There is no demonstration or march. |
? "Demonstration" doesn't necessarily mean "everybody shows up in the same place at the same time with signs". Clearly women here are demonstrating something -- for example, women are demonstrating that things get disrupted when women walk off the job. |
