I think the schools look at your income in the two years before the start year. You could go on some of the college websites and plug numbers into their financial aid simulators. Lots more aid in years when there are 2-3 kids in college simultaneously.
This is not our experience. We have 2 kids in college, and we were surprised how little FA we received. Our EFC said we were eligible for FA, but we got nothing. I filled out the FAFSA and the CSS, but got nothing. Most colleges offered us some un-subsidized loans, but that doesn't count as FA to me.
