most houses in this area are colonial style and not very modern looking, so i don't think this is a good plan.

Not really, tons of newer homes here are so called "craftsman" style.

+1
Using the term very, very loosely! LOL.

If there's a fireplace, see how you can remove traditional features like molding around it. Can you paint it all one color?

Here's something to work towards:

The updates look hideous!

I find it hard to make a decision on whether hideous or not as the after photos are not shot from same angle - the kitchen probably comes closest. That said, the LR, kitchen, and entry way were screaming for updates.

How expensive and difficult would it be to modernize the look? I wouldn't want to completely gut the kitchens and baths right away because they are fully functional and look OK - just not great, dated. What would be a quick and dirty way to make the house look more fresh? Any blog ideas or magazine articles you recommend?

thanks!

Look at the new Obama house listing photos. http://wtop.com/real-estate/2017/01/photos-inside-obamas-new-house/slide/52/

Old house with great paint and fixtures. Antiques mixed with contempory and traditional. Also note some brass sconces. If brass knobs - don't replace just pull in other things via lights. Black framed art with gold line on frame.

Wtf did they do to the ceilings?!?

I agree, this is awful! You know it is a bad renovation when the 80s blue velour and grandma decor looks better than the uodates.

Yeah, don't do this. Most people would prefer the before picture.
