I'm unclear what you are referring to. In the post you are responding to, I describe some skills that are necessary for what I say is a task that is NOT NECESSARY for reading (the task of identifying words that start with the letter s or sound /s/. I don't know why OP is concerned about her child being able to accomplish this task, but if she does, that's on her -- and I think it would be easier to have her child do it a different way. My earlier post outlined a way to teach kids beginning sounds of key words and link them to a letter. This can start as early as age 3. It is not harmful to try these as early as age 3 and a half, if it is done in a low key way, but if a child isn't able to do it easily I would wait until age 4 or 5. Yes, if you force a child who isn't able to do these activities to do them, and yell at them because they suck at the tasks, it will be harmful. |
