When a plate has a chip...

If it's small I keep it. We have two plates with chips out of about 30. When my kids get one they yell "I got chippy". I don't know why, but they love them.

Perhaps your MIL is rich because she does not go out and buy new china when it gets chipped.

+1

As long as the plates are clean - who cares.

I toss them.
My mom tossed them. My grandmother kept everything and it drove my mom crazy so she became a tosser of anything chipped or broken. I followed suit.

My dh's mom was a bit of a hoarder, so he tends to toss everything as a reaction to that. Drives me kinda nuts. I lean towards "keeping stuff". Fortunately for him, we're military and move all the time, so it's definately lessened my "keep everything" instincts. I only keep chipped plates if its a unique piece I really love. If it were part of my set and I could replace it, I would do that instead.
