Does closely checking my receipts everytime I buy something at a store make me a cheapskate?

Anonymous
I add things up in my head as I shop. If there is an issue, I pay and take t to the service counter to be fixed. The person at the Target counter gave me a bunch of attitude once for bringing the receipt and sunglasses to her. It had a large price sticker on the lens. She acted like I put the sticker there. Their computers are off surpringly often. You'd think she knows that already.

I don't think it makes you cheap. That's the reason they give you a receipt.

I've seen items (inadvertently) double-swiped in grocery stores, so, yeah, I check or watch.

I watch as they ring. At Costco this weekend the cashier rang me up for 8 bottles of wine. I had 6. (They were all the same, so he just took one bottle and scanned it 8 times.) I immediately said "Hey, I only have 6 of those!"

Change that to $20 I'm more understanding. If no one is in line more understanding, all context.

you grew up with more money than I did apparently. And less sense too.

It's fine if you want to spend your time haggling over small amounts of money. I choose not to because I don't enjoy that. I think if you're holding up a lot of people over a couple dollars than you're pretty full of yourself. No problem with the people who are going to the service desk or whatever.

It all evens out in the end, sometimes errors go my way, sometimes they go the stores way.

That is just asinine.

I can't tell you the number of times I walked out got home only to find out I either left paid merchandise in a bag on the rotating bag thing or was over charged for items.

Yes, I check in the store. Am I cheap ? No.

I make it a note to double check if the tag on the shelf has a different price than on the item. Just this weekend I scanned my receipt as I was walking out of the Container Store after noticing that the item rang up at full price and not 9$ cheaper--for two it saved me almost 20$

How is that asinine? If your kid accidentally dropped a $5 bill out on the highway would you stop your car and cause a traffic jam to pick it up? Some inadvertent thing happened which cost you a small out of money and to rectify it you have to inconvenience other people. IMO if the amount is paltry (which based on the HHIs cited here on DCUM is true for most of the posters here) and you have to inconvenience other people to fix it than you're being silly and selfish.

I just went back to Walmart twice in the past couple of weeks for stuff that was bad - melted and inedible popsicles and chicken that turned. I got $10 total back and I don't care if I'm cheap.

Name the restaurants, I have had this happen maybe twice in a life at most and I am in my 40's.

To the OP, no, you are not being a cheapskate. It is your job as a consumer to make sure you are billed correctly for the merchandise. There is a reason that JcPenny (although they need to add more) and Macy's have price checkers all over the store. Some people do not know how to read signs, and in the grocery store case, some people don't realize that sometimes only certain amount of ounces of something is on sale and not all of the same item.

It's happened to us in restaurants - can't remember which ones. Typically it is the beverages that are more on the check - ie - higher price for the wine than what was ordered or charged for more beverages than what was ordered.

Does this make me a cheapskate?

No it doesn't. Though I rarely look at my receipts because I usually do self checkout or shop online.

You are ridiculously cheap. You wasted time and gas.
