Sadly I have been hanging around DCUM for way too many years. For some reason the "Be honest" thing has recently started to really irritate me. Especially when it doesn't make any sense, like here. I can see "Be honest: Do you spank your kids?" or "Be honest: Do you have sex dreams about Jeff?" But using the "Come on ladies, let's get real with each other here" tone when asking about tipping is just weird so it seems more insulting. |
I usually do 20% and round up to the nearest $5. |
20% and I round down as the service gets more expensive. |
I tip 20%. That person was incredibly rude. I hope you reported her to a manager. |
I stick pretty close to 20% for my hair and the occasional massage i get.
For cheap services like nails at my vietnamese salon, I tip a lot more. Like if it's $43 for mani/pedi, i'll pay $60. I've read the nytimes articles.... they need the money a lot more than i do at this point. ![]() By the same token, i also tip $5 to the hair wash girl at my salon (in addition to the 20% i gave to my colorist and stylist on their services). When i was in my 20s and early 30s and cash was tighter, i was tighter about tips. And honestly i think totally within my rights. $2 for the shampoo girl. $5 for mani/pedi. And 20% elsewhere. Not offensive, but not over the top. But we have a lot of cash now, and i use these services so infrequently, that i'd rather tip generously for the cheap services since they need it more than me. It probably only adds up to an additional $80 throughout the whole year. No matter how much cash i have though, i think it's ridiculous to start tipping 25% on the higher earners. When i go in for cut and color, it's $300. I'm not tipping $75. It's ridiculous i'm even tipping $60. (And as an aside, the colorist tipping is most ridiculous of all, given that between consult, bleach application, mixing color, and applying, i think they only spend 25 minutes on me, and they're able to work with multiple other clients while i'm there.) |
And those for us who tip well make up for people like you so that people who live on tips can support themselves. You're welcome. |
My hair stylist does not live on tips - she is allowed to set the price of her services. I tip as a token of my appreciation. It's not meant to be income. |
I usually do 20%. If someone was unhappy with a 20% tip, I would cross it out and leave a $0 tip. |
About 20% |
20 percent, but I tip on the full value, not what I paid with my package discount, coupon, groupon, gift card, etc.
OP, was your massage somehow discounted? |
I always tip 20 percent unless these is a problem with the service-- or if it's a really cheap service like a basic manicure, etc. I give them $5. |
Uhhhh-- it actually IS meant to be income. They're in the service industry and they expect a certain percentage of tip per each client, unless your stylist owns the salon. Don't be cheap. |
I always tip 20%. Mainly bc the math is easy. |
Every time I'm getting my hair done, my stylist talks half the time about how much money she makes. |
Is it Christmas? No? Then 20%. |
