Have you ever been to China? I've lived there for a few years. Whites are treated like royalty or rockstars....it's bizarre. Cops won't hassel you, unless you're doing something egregious. Cashiers and government offices will let you cut the line. Women will be all over you (if you're a white man). Bouncers and maitre 'ds will let you cut the line or get escorted to a table right away. On an everyday social level, you're waaaaaay more privileged in China as a white person than even here in U.S. That said, you'll never run a major Chinese company, be a senior government official, or even attain Chinese citizenship. If you really want to see absurdness of white privilege, go to China as an black person. People will spit at you and call you a "dog" to your face, even if you're wealthy black American or a Nobel Laureate. They only view blacks as "worthy" in relation to their athletic abilities. It's crazy. |
Agree with this. For Egypt. White is preferable to regular Egyptian. And for what it's worth, PP up there complaining about Harlem, when I lived in an all black, relatively poor neighborhood in Baltimore and was the only white employee (other than a boss) in the city jail, I was treated better than almost everyone else. At work and at home. Racism is a very powerful thing, and it impacts everyone. |
Can't speak about Cleveland, but it's evident from your rambling that you've never been to Harlem or China. |
I work at a social work publication, and we use white and black (lowercased) as preferred terms, although we respect authors' preferred self-descriptors. |
I actually AM Caucasian so I have no problem with that at all.
Interestingly, though, I don't look white, so I have people asking me where I'm from or what I am all the time. |
Ha. When I'm asked on a doctor's form about race, I always have to pause and think if they want white/Caucasian or Ashkenazi Jewish (because frequently the form goes on to ask questions about inheritable diseases for Ashkenazi Jews). if you ask me, I will probably say white. If the form says Caucasian, I'll check that without heartburn. Doesn't matter to me. |
White trash with money. |
You, on the other hand, can't speak about anything. |
You have lived in China but never saw the correlation between white spending habits and the preferential treatment you receive. It is not about your skin color but the thickness of your wallet. That has been my experience. |
Curb your nationalism. Are you an American from Mexico, from Canada, from the United States? |
American from the ONLY race that actually exists: human. All the rest is outdated, already debunked thinking. Why cling to it? |
The term Caucasian to describe race was invented by a racist German philosopher/anthropologist who distinguished Caucasian and Mongolian races (whatever either is), and claimed that the former was superior in everything, including looks. I am guessing he considered non-Caucasian and non-Mongolians not worth even to be analyzed by his superior being. Just this story should be enough to stop using the term to describe race.
Full disclosure: I am from Caucasian region, and it has for centuries been a mix of while/less-white/almost brown people with all sorts of religions that mostly hated each other... |
well, I will tell you that currently in demographic questions in polls, they are BOTH used - together.
Just like Black/AA is used together. Whether it is right or not is a subject for debate, but they are all accepted use until it is deemed otherwise. |
I prefer to be called 'white chocolate.' |
European American. |
