Still on waitlist - are you surprised?

For years Type A/DCUM parents complained about having to enter multiple lotteries and a lack of transparency. They begged for a centralized, online system.

Well they got their wish. And those with good numbers get their top choices.

What we need are more quality seats. And unless you are in bound for a designated Title 1 school with guaranteed admission, you do NOT have a right to PK3.

Since a lot of schools start PK3 tomorrow, is there any chance that there will be some waitlist movement toward the end of this week or early next week?

Yes. If they have no-show families they will usually give them a call and see what's up. However, at lots of schools, PS3 is comprised mainly of younger siblings of existing students, so the likelihood of a child being a no-show is not too high. But if you're first on a waitlist, all it takes is one!

Thanks! I need two and am holding out hope!

for PS3 - I would guess the list will move through labor day. They are young and chances are 1 or 2 students are not ready for the transition to school. The family will try to make it work for the 1st 2 weeks and realize they need to wait for next year.

Sure, I guess it's a bummer for people on waitlists but for the schools and the school communities it's great. Less shuffling around at the start of school when things are chaotic already. It's a pretty big bummer for a class to begin to gel and then a handful of kids are suddenly no longer there. The basic problem in DC now is there are just not enough spots at desirable or even acceptable schools.

Just being great for the school isn't good enough. The system needs to be great for families as well, or DC will continue to lose families to the suburbs - where they care about things like education.

Assuming that the total spots hasn't changed, having little waitlist movement doesn't mean fewer people are getting spots. The spots are just being distributed earlier in the game.
