Can't fool God.

I don't see anything sinful in reading other philosophers, or taking hip-hop or ballet classes. Technically, you can get obsessed with anything in your life and begging to worship even a stone. God looks at your heart and not at the way how you blended your body.

You have absolutely no clue what Buddhism is. All religions are philosophical paths. The Buddha doesn't have to be a "god" for Buddhism to be a religion - is Prophet Muhammad a god? Are the rishis of the Hindu Upanishads gods? No.

Buddhism is based on a dharmic spirituality that:
1) does allow for the existence of deities, and in fact those deities are actively worshipped in Tibetan Buddhism, especially the Gelugpa school (hello Saraswati, beloved goddess of the Tibetan Buddhists)
2) believes that consciousness is separate from the mind, and reincarnates from body to body, not only in the physical realm of Earth but also on 6 realms of existence, from the lowest hells to the celestial heavens (yes, Buddhism has heavens), with the ultimate goal to transcend heaven itself and enter the Void.

JFC I cannot stand it when people say "Buddhism isn't a religion". Ignorant as shit.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. There are many, many different types of Buddhism. I'm not going to waste time typing out a response. Pretty sure most people would listen to Thich Nhat Hanh over some ranty DCUM poster, so I'll just leave this here. Signed, A Buddhist Christian.

I read a book a few years ago by a Buddhist on the subject of similarities between Buddhism and Christianity.

Lol, no honey. It's possible to be Buddhist and atheist, it's possible to be Buddhist and nihilistic, and it's possible to adapt Buddhist principles to a Christian practice. But to say Buddhism itself isn't a religion is jaw-droppingly ignorant.

Plenty of Hindu missionaries like Jaggi Vasudev also say that Hinduism isn't a religion because that's part of the "we accept all" message - doesn't mean Hinduism isn't a religion. And the fact that you basically flat-out ignored foundational Buddhist theology that I wrote in my post convinces me that you're essentially just determined to wear your feel-good blinders and stubbornly appropriate whatever the fuck you want. Go ahead, just don't pretend that you are actually informed about Buddhism.

THANK YOU! I am the poster who posted Thay's quote above. Though why we are talking about Buddhism when Yoga his Hindu is baffling. Maybe I need to go back and read the whole thread. You can be a Christian who practices Buddhism or Hinduism. My new-thought Christian church uses teachings from both all the time. If you are evangelical or Shia Catholic like the pp, it might be an issue. My Catholic faith has never been at odds with any other spiritual path.

Yeah, again ranty DCUM monk. I'm going to listen to those who actually know what they are talking about. Thay was just one example. I could post hundreds more. I have a feeling it wouldn't do any good. Also, I am a minister. My three years in seminary likely trumps your google-fu.

I am blown away by your intellectual arguments and deep insights into Buddhism. Your eloquence and demonstration of knowledge have utterly convinced me of your argument. I congratulate you for this mature, thoughtful, intelligent response, for it has forced me to finally take you seriously!
