Book about poverty. Help me with the title.

I wasn't blown away by it either. My mom, who worked hard all her life as a nurse although my father made good money, said the book really taught her that saying "just get a job at McDonald's or Walmart," about someone who can't make ends meet or who won't get a job, isn't realistic. Those jobs suck, and can't raise a family.

Is that the one about the family in the Bronx with a gazillion characters, having babies, getting evicted, moving from one awful apartment to the next and the main character gets caught up with a thug ...?
That was such a crazy story it couldn't have been fiction.

Most frustrating book ever.
