100% effaced--what does this really mean?

No one NEEDS a childbirth class, it's not nessisary just an added expense for them to make more money, ask your doctor what it means that's why they are there. Period.

But other than that it doesn't mean anything.

Let's cool down on this vaginal checks that lead to panic, unless numbers, and excuses to give you a c-section.

You could not be more wrong lmao

Actually, PP is correct. With each internal exam, you risk introducing bacteria into your vagina, which can lead to an infection (i.e., fever during labor). Further, bc everyone's labor progresses differently, internal checks don't provide much useful information, the exception being a check during transition to make sure it's time to push. Ask questions of your medical provider as to why they want to perform an internal check, and you can make an informed decision re: whether to consent to one.

It is my understanding that the bacteria is already in the vagina, not introduced. It is being pushed further up with checks. That's why they no longer use sterile gloves for checking the cervix.

One thing it does is improve your Bishop score if you need to be induced. I was 80% effaced/finger tip dilated, and my induction went super quickly and successfully.

I have trouble just getting out of bed or sitting for too long. And I'm afraind that if he gets too big then I wont be able to go through a vaginal birth. I really don't want a c-section...Is this good enough reason for my Dc. to say yes? I'm 38wks and 2dys. My due date is Sept. 18th.

most doctors will not induce before 39 weeks unless there is medical necessity.

Oh sweetie, and induction actually INCREASES your chances of a c-section by a large degree.

On the topic of childbirth education -- if you trust your doctor 100% then I guess there's no need to research anything/take classes. But it seems weird to me that you'd go into labor not knowing anything AT ALL?

Her Due date is in Sept - way out in Sept - she is NOT going into labor tomorrow - plenty of time for her to do in-depth study. It was a simple question - there are worse/sillier questions on this forum. Cut her some slack. One can advice OP to read x, y book/source but why berate her.

PP, this is an old post - look at the date - she was really going in with not much knowledge so some folks here picked on her. You are right though, we could all be gentler.

Can you read? She said she was 38 weeks. That was September, as in last September. She's long gone with her baby screaming and crying because he/she refused the second nap and it's all because of that damn cervical exam at 38 weeks. If only she would have known better...

For those of you saying this is why ppl should take classes it obviously didn't help much if you all ended up on this site too

Wow, there is a lot of misinformation from laypeople on here. OP please call your provider with any questions you have, they are the best source of information and will be there when you are delivering.

Yes, you should definitely pay for a child birth class to get information you can learn on the Internet for free.

The OP of this thread wrote on 2011. She's had her baby by now.
