Nelson Mandela did join the South African communist party in 1960's
I suppose apartheid was successful because of history. British fought a brutal war to get hold of the gold and diamonds, did not care what was going on as long as they could still privately hold the riches.
American corporations were also involved

I suppose something similar was going on in other parts of the world, like Nigeria
