OP, ever since we bought a new car with keyless ignition, I have had the problem of forgetting to turn off the car. Or leaving my car fob IN the car.

It does happen, and it is a problem.

Op I left mine running all day at work once. I was stressed about being late. Now I always have the radio on because that way I'll know the car is off bc it'll be quiet.

That's what I do too. The silence is what makes me realize the car is off.
And for the CO issue, I went down some rabbit hole of internet clicks one time and found myself reading an article about how it's impossible to commit suicide with a hybrid because it will never emit enough CO to do any damage. I could never find it again because who the hell knows how I got there, but it was interesting. I don't think you were ever in any real danger.

My parents have done this. Yes, you have to get into a routine of turning off the engine, but what they also did was to put a sign of turn off the engine on their steering wheel.

We recently got a car that starts with a button rather than the key and it's thrown my whole routine completely off and I am getting out of the car all the time with the engine still running. After twenty years of doing it one way, PLUS grumpy kids...it's totally understandable how it happened.

Thankfully it has a pretty annoying alarm that alerts me.

Am kinda surprised, though, the car would stay on. I would have assumed modern cars would have an automatic shutoff.

THIS! Because we sometimes have to let our dog out into the backyard in the middle of the night, we keep a note on our sunporch doors to remind us about the alarm.

Keyless cars do not use a key. Some cars will stop if the key fob is not within a certain distance of the car, but many do not require the fob to stay with the car. Obviously, if the car runs out of gas, it will stop.

Yes, yes, sorry... I meant the fob. If you have a fob do you keep it with your house keys or in the car? In the car seems not wise.

This is why I don't want a keyless car. I'm afraid though my next car will be as it seems to be a more common feature. Hopefully there is a way to disable the keyless option to force the use of the key.

I agree keyless is a bad idea and could lead to more deaths.

I don't understand why keyless is a good feature. It's confusing and annoying whenever I borrow my parents' prius.

This happened to a neighbor of mine. I noticed a car idling across the street from my house but I didn't know who it belonged to. I didn't want to write the neighborhood listserve because I was afraid that would draw attention to it and someone might steal it. (We live in that kind of a neighborhood.) Looking back on it, I should have called 911 and they could have looked up the registration. The next morning it was still idling and another neighbor told me she thought it was a specific neighbor whose number I had. I called him and it was his. He's hard of hearing so apparently he didn't hear that the car hadn't turned off when he left to go in his house.

If you're afraid of this happening again, park outside on your driveway or on the street. Yes it's a pain to have to carry sleeping kids inside and yes you're risking your car being stolen, but it's still way way safer for you.
