Why are Fertility Drugs so expensive?

Yes, I'm sure. I'm always on here (unfortunately) and I try to keep my own feelings of sadness (and yes, bitterness) to myself when I read stuff on the expectant mom forum like "Oh no, I'm pregnant with my third and it was a huge mistake!" We all read recent topics, but it's helpful to take note of the forum. In general, us infertility folks have a whole lot of empathy for each other.

I just try to remind myself that everyone has their struggles, and you truly don't know what it's like until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes....but some days those tired clichés don't get me very far. I stop just short of posting "go take a look at the infertility forum to gauge how much of a tragedy this really is" but I know I'd get my head bitten off, so I refrain.

Op here, I was looking for some intelligent insight into the issue of Merck having a monopoly on fertility medications, but I guess that's too much to ask for this forum. Thanks to those who did respond politely

They hold a patent for the med they developed, it's legal and is a normal industry practice. What other intelligent insight were you hoping for?

I think the question is more, why are fertility drugs different than other types of drugs in this regard?

I haven't looked into it (because it would probably just piss me off more), but if the drugs have been around more than 10 years, why isn't there a generic available?
