So you are highly educated and you think citing an anecdote from a different school supports a claim that there is a "parallel university" in place to educate minority students at UVA. Okay. |
The same people keep starting these kinds of threads here and in the Political forum. They are also the ones who complain that URMs are taking all the seats from white applicants yet the stats don't reflect that. URM stats traditionally remain in the single digits with many colleges at 3-4%. PP, guaranteed if it wasn't this, those posters would find something else. |
Nope, and as I said in my post, I didn't know if it was replicated outside the department. Our department definitely had significant resources allocated to help URM students. Engineering department wide, UVA does offer free tutoring through the center for diversity in engineering: http://www.seas.virginia.edu/admin/diversity/2016_spring.pdf |
They world is gradually changing. Each year there are more URM kids who qualify for top schools without EEO. Mine scored 35 on the ACT, had great grades from a Big three, super recommendations, and astounding ECAs including an international award. and guess what, he got into an IVY. His stats are in the top 25 % of his IVY class. Based on objective criteria, I doubt he took your kid's place. |
However, there were white/Asian applicants with better stats who were rejected by that IVY. |
The short answer: nothing that great. |
There are always people with better stats that are rejected. Schools look at whether person surpasses certain scores, beyond that all are deemed "qualified." Lower scoring white people are let in over higher scoring white kids.
|
That "certain score" is much lower for URM than Asian/white kids. |
You are in your own fantasy land where no facts are stats will convince you. Those URMs do just fine at said schools and graduate at a very high rate, so even if scores are lower, so what.
No spot is owed to anyone. |
I guess we are done here then. |
Actually, Asian females are held to the highest standards. White males have it easier today than 30 years ago - surprisingly since we are blaimed for pretty much everything. |
Yes, I've been done. For those who hyper-focus on the low number of slots of URMS, I have nothing more to add either. |
I'm not white but I feel sorry for you people. ![]() |
There is such an over-reliance on scores. I know of kids who have taken the SAT's/ACTs five or six times to get that "perfect" score after several thousand dollars of tutoring. What does that really show you about a kid's abilities to succeed at college.
Also, some kids with high statistics are just that, a kid with high stats. They may or may not have good social skills, or good or interesting outside activities. They may not interview well. There are lots of intangibles. |
URMs need to meet the standard to ultimately gain respect. Coming from another URM. |
